Dr. W. Jack Duncan is Professor of Management & University Scholar Emeritus in the Graduate School of Management at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jack also holds appointments as Professor of Health Care Organization & Policy in the School of Public Health where he is a Senior Scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and a Senior Lecturer in the John Sparkman Center for International Public Health Education. Duncan received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Jack has served in a number of faculty and administrative positions at UAB. He has been chair of an academic department, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Management, and Interim Dean of the School of Business. In addition he was director of the MBA Program, co-founding director of the Ph.D. program in Administration-health services, and director of the Center for Management Studies.
Professor Duncan served as visiting professor of management sciences at the International Business Institute and Entrepreneurial Research Centre in Switzerland, visiting professor of public health at the Medical University of Lima, Peru, Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and visiting professor of management and leadership at Northeastern University in Boston. He presently serves as a Visiting Scholar at the Medical University of South Carolina. Jack is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management, past Chair of the Management Education and Development Division of the Academy, and is past President of both the Southern Management Association (SMA) and the Southwest Division of the Academy of Management. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and served as Deputy Dean of the Fellows. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Management and is a Founding Fellow of the Southern Management Association. He served as Dean of the SMA Fellows.
Professor Duncan is the author or co-author of a 16 books. He is the co-author of “Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations” (Blackwell Publishing) which is in its sixth edition and is the best selling textbook in this area. He is the author of “Great Ideas in Management” which has been translated into seven languages and “Management: Ideas & Actions”. His more than 110 research articles have been published in leading management and health care journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Management Science, Public Administration Review, Public Health Reports, Public Health, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies and others. His co-authored paper in the Academy of Management Executive was recognized as the most outstanding article published in that journal in 2004. In 2007 the Southern Management Association honored Jack with its Jerry G. Hunt Sustained Outstanding Service Award in recognition of a lifetime of service to that organization.
Jack been a consultant to numerous public health organizations and has assisted a number of state and local health agencies in the area of strategic planning. He has also worked as an advisor to a number of businesses and for-profit and not-for-profit health care organizations throughout the United States.
