Professor Jan Oosterveld, professor of entrepreneurship at IESE Business School in Barcelona, retired in March 2004 as a member of the Group Management Committee of Royal Philips Electronics, where he oversaw corporate strategy, corporate alliances, and two joint ventures with LGE. As part of the latter role, he served as chairman of the Board of Directors of LG.Philips LCD in Seoul, and as a member of the Supervisory Board of LG.Philips Displays in Hong Kong.
He was also responsible for the overseeing the IPO process of LCD JV in April 2004, the largest IPO in Asia that year. In addition, he has served as CEO of Philips Asia Pacific. Born in Emmen, in the Netherlands, Professor Oosterveld graduated in mechanical engineering and factory automation from Eindhoven Technical University. He joined the Small Domestic Appliances Division of Philips in 1972 and held a variety of management positions in Barcelona, Groningen and Drachten, where he was plant manager.
After a period of two years in the video recorder factory in Vienna, part of the Consumer Electronics Division, Oosterveld moved to Eindhoven, where he was in charge of industrial operations and later oversaw the R&D activities of the Video Recorder Business Group in 1983. In 1989, he founded the Philips Key Modules Business Group and oversaw 7 years of rapidly growing sales. He joined Philips’ senior management team in 1997, where he reported directly to the CEO and was part of the very small team that lead the company’s transformation. Oosterveld received his Master’s degree in Business Administration at IESE in Barcelona. In 2002, he was appointed professor at IESE. He is also a regular lecturer at various business schools around the world. In addition, Oosterveld is the chancellor of the International Academy of Management, a member of the board of the Strategic Management Society and a member of the Board of Supervisors of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands).In 2003, he joined the board of directors of Continental in Germany, and in 2004 became a member of the boards of Crucell in the Netherlands, Barco in Belgium, Cookson in the UK and Atos Origin in France. Oosterveld founded a number of management consultancy and investment companies in the Netherlands and Spain in 2004. He is both a fellow and an advisory board member of the Global Business Policy Council of AT Kearney, as well as a senior advisor of Morgan Stanley.
